First Responder UAS 3D Mapping Challenge
Launched on April 18, 2023, by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Division, the First Responder Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) 3D Mapping Challenge (UAS 5.0) is offering up to $987,500 in prize awards for contestants who successfully design, build, and operate a cost-effective UAS solution that enhances situational awareness and image detection for forest responders prior to entering a building. Specifically, winning solutions will leverage a technological mapping method, such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), to provide an accurate, high-quality 3D map in real-time for locating missing person(s) and life-threatening obstacles in an indoor, low-light, GPS-denied, or otherwise constrained environment. Yeah definitely a job for GeoSlam. The question is how this can be done in a hazardous environment. True 3D scans with survey grade require Lidar. Second question is how we have a larger device in a confined space. I wonder what the smallest dimension Geo Slam can put out on a low payload drone? I have been doing Survey mapping for around six years but this is a first. Maybe Im behind times. Can’t wait to see the final results.
