DRONERESPONDERS Inspires the Next Generation at Smithsonian “Innovations in Flight”

On Saturday, June 13, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia hosted the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s annual “Innovations in Flight” Outdoor Aviation Display, bringing together more than 60 vintage, modern, and commercial aircraft in a celebration of aviation’s past, present, and future.

From historic aircraft to cutting-edge aviation technology, attendees experienced a full day of exploration, hands-on learning, and direct engagement with pilots and innovators. Alongside the aviation showcases, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) played an increasingly prominent role—highlighting their growing importance across public safety and aerospace.

The outdoor display featured a wide range of aircraft, including civilian planes, military assets, helicopters, and a commercial airline jet. Inside the museum, the “Soar Together at Air and Space” family day series provided additional programming, including live demonstrations, STEM-focused activities, and opportunities to learn more about emerging technologies such as drones and their real-world applications.

DRONERESPONDERS: A Hub of Energy and Engagement

Among the most dynamic areas of the event was the DRONERESPONDERS exhibit, which quickly became one of the most popular destinations for families and young attendees.

The DRONERESPONDERS table drew continuous crowds throughout the day, eager to participate in the experience. Parents captured photos and videos as their children engaged with the program, creating lasting memories tied to innovation and public safety.

A highlight of the day was the ceremonial “swearing-in” of children as Junior DRONERESPONDER Remote Pilots.

Each participant took part in an interactive oath ceremony and received an official DRONERESPONDERS badge. The impact was immediate, kids proudly wore their badges throughout the event, creating a visible sense of excitement and belonging.

The program underscored the importance of early engagement in STEM and public safety careers, introducing young participants to the mission-driven applications of unmanned aircraft systems.

The DRONERESPONDERS presence was supported by a collaborative group of public safety agencies, industry leaders, and academic partners, including:
