DRONERESPONDERS Working Group Submits Comments on SAFER SKIES Act Interim Final Rule
The DRONERESPONDERS SAFER SKIES Act Interim Final Rule Working Group recently submitted formal comments regarding the implementation of the SAFER SKIES Act authorities for State, local, Tribal, and territorial (SLTT) agencies.
Comprised of representatives from 14 states and 28 public safety and corrections agencies, the Working Group focused on a single objective: ensuring the final rule provides a practical, scalable, and sustainable framework that agencies of all sizes can successfully implement.
While the Interim Final Rule represents an important step forward for public safety Counter-UAS operations, the Working Group identified several areas where additional clarity is needed before agencies can confidently invest in training, technology, personnel, and operational programs. Key themes included training requirements, technology authorization, procurement eligibility, data management, reporting requirements, contractor support, and regional collaboration.
The Working Group emphasized that the long-term success of the SAFER SKIES Act will depend not only on the authorities provided, but also on whether agencies can clearly understand how to operationalize and maintain compliant C-UAS programs over the coming years.
The full comments provide detailed recommendations and considerations intended to support effective implementation while maintaining appropriate accountability, oversight, and protection of civil liberties.
