More Than a Summit: DRONERESPONDERS Brings Public Safety to the Center Stage at Commercial UAV Expo

Commercial UAV Expo has long been one of the premier gatherings in the drone industry, bringing together technology providers, operators, regulators, and end users from around the world. This year, DRONERESPONDERS expanded its presence with the largest Public Safety Summit to date, creating a dedicated environment where public safety professionals could learn, collaborate, and share operational lessons from the field.

Across three days, more than 300 attendees participated in DRONERESPONDERS programming, reflecting the continued growth and maturity of public safety UAS operations. The event combined leadership training, technical education, operational case studies, and networking opportunities designed specifically for first responders.

Day One: Building Better Programs

The week began with the inaugural DRONERESPONDERS Program Managers Course, a new two-day training program developed to help agencies build, sustain, and scale successful drone programs. Covering topics such as program development, training management, safety management systems, leadership, funding, return on investment, and emerging technologies, the course addressed many of the challenges identified by public safety agencies across the country.

The response exceeded expectations.

The course sold out, with nearly every seat filled by public safety professionals looking to take their programs to the next level. The strong demand reinforced what many agencies already know: while pilot training remains important, the industry is increasingly focused on developing the leadership, governance, and management skills required to sustain long-term operations.

Days Two and Three: Sharing Lessons from the Field

While the Program Managers Course continued on Day Two, the DRONERESPONDERS Public Safety Summit officially kicked off with a series of panel discussions and presentations covering the most important topics facing public safety aviation today.

Sessions explored the state of public safety UAS operations, Drone as First Responder programs, fire service applications, training standards, shared airspace operations, counter-UAS preparedness, and emerging technologies shaping the future of public safety aviation. The focus throughout the Summit remained practical and operational, with presenters sharing real-world successes, challenges, and lessons learned from agencies actively using these technologies every day.

The discussions highlighted how rapidly the profession continues to evolve and underscored the growing importance of collaboration between public safety agencies, regulators, industry partners, and training organizations.

Beyond the Classroom

The learning didn't stop in the conference rooms.

Throughout the event, attendees visited the DRONERESPONDERS Public Safety Pavilion on the exhibit floor, where organizations showcased technologies and solutions specifically designed to support public safety missions. The Pavilion also served as a gathering place for networking, collaboration, and informal conversations between agencies facing many of the same operational challenges.

A major attraction was the DRONERESPONDERS NIST team, which spent the week educating attendees on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Test Methods and their role in developing objective performance measurements for public safety drone operations. These demonstrations provided agencies with valuable insight into how standardized testing can support training, proficiency, and program development.

The Pavilion also hosted the Public Safety Happy Hour, sponsored by Echodyne and Red Cat, giving attendees an opportunity to connect with colleagues, partners, and industry leaders in a relaxed setting after a full day of programming.

Looking Ahead

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this year's Commercial UAV Expo was the continued growth and professionalism of the public safety UAS community. From agencies launching their first programs to mature organizations operating hundreds of aircraft, attendees shared a common goal: leveraging technology to improve public safety outcomes while building sustainable, professional programs.

The energy, engagement, and participation throughout the week demonstrated that public safety aviation continues to be one of the most active and innovative segments of the UAS industry.
